es.com/2003/12/21/movies/21JAME.html">female complaint about The Lord of the Rings that ran in today's International Herald-Tribune:
Take a little poll at your office. I found a male colleague who saw the film and said, "It was great — of course I'm a big geek." There was the female colleague who went because her boyfriend wanted to, and who explained her own interest by saying, "I'm so in love with Viggo"(not her boyfriend's name).
In fairness to the female fans of LOTR, I should mention that it were my mother who first introduced me to Middle Earth, and she absolutely adored the first two movies....

Me, I groaned every time that interminable flute played, and nearly every time the hobbitses made wet eyes at each other ... though I appreciate the homo-erotic subtext. But really, most all the groan-inducing qualities were right there in the original text (we should be thankful that we received precious little of the song-poetry crap). If the nonsensically portentious mid-war patter and mawkish post-adventure false endings made you squirm, well, don't read the book! Unless of course you want to see the unsanitized story of The Shire's post-war befoulment....

But now a woman in my office says she likes it. Damn, now I'm all confused. New York Times, can't I believe anything you tell me anymore?

Yeah, the movie was fantastic. The only problems were that Viggo is terrible as a heroic actor (stand up straight for once, would ya? And use a manly voice when exhorting the troops) and Sean Astin cried in every scene, which wouldn't be so bad if he weren't such a horrible crier.
