New Reason Online Column -- 'Baseball Welfare: Will the Marlins Soak Miami Taxpayers Once Again?' Some economics-of-baseball stuff, with many links to great, newly discovered sites that I'll be visiting soon (and would link to right now, but it's too hot in my office, and I'm having too much fun watching our juvenile squirrel root around for fallen olives in our bountiful back yard, which is producing all kinds of edible wine grapes, peppers, parsley, cucumbers, pomegranates, thyme, and suchlike).

The Doug Pappas blog is fantastic. I liked the recent Doug Bandow op-ed in WaPo, too.

Very good work, Matt, as always.

I don't think this gets stressed enough, that baseball parks and football stadiums are two different birds as far as public investment is concerned. I don't see how a football stadium provides any significant community benefit, simply because it will be used only 6-10 times a year (depending on whether the tenant is a pro or college team), not counting the occasional rock concert. The profit margin for the landlord would be much tighter as well, particularly if the team is bad and the fans stay away. Baseball stadiums, which have events at least 81 times a year, and basketball/hockey arenas are a much wiser investment for the entrepreneur, and the positive impact that it has on the community makes it worthwhile for local government to grease wheels to make it happen.
