James: I got that!

Matt -- fair enough on the Slav question! They've got their nations now and no one should take them away. But Lordy, what a ride to independence! I just don't think the kind of nationalism they got behind in the late 19th century has done them much good for, oh, a century or so.

Would the Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians etc have been such suckers for various forms of collectivism over the last century if they hadn't started off with such a lousy vision of themselves? I don't think it's an accident that Communism has always flourished where resentful ethnic nationalism plowed the ground.

And that goes for other parts of the world too. Are the Arabs the 21st century Slavs? Impolitic, but...

...back the point at hand. Go Ahnold! (:

Remember after Sept 11 everyone thought nothing would be the same again?

With Kobe Bryant, Arnold Schwartznegger, and Gary Coleman being the daily headline news I think we can safely say that the USofA has rebounded remarkably well.

I moved from Southern California to Oregon just over two years ago, and am enjoying things up here immensely; however, there are a few things that I miss greatly about living in the state of my birth. Very high on the list are:

1) Tommy's double chili cheeseburgers, and
2) Seeing Jill Stewart's appearances on "Life and Times" on KCET.

Hard to choose which one I miss more--the Tommy burger is one of the most genuine pieces of art ever produced in this part of the world; on the other hand, Jill Stewart is a goddess, and I'm fairly certain she's not fattening.
