Defending Bennett's Good Name:

Defending Bennett's Good Name:

Two personal details I happened to know about Bennett before this broke were 1) he likes to smoke cigarettes... LOTS of cigarettes and 2) he once dated Janis Joplin. This is a man with aggressive tastes. Should we be be deeply surprised?

Kinsley and others are having too much fun here. How exactly did Bennett get under people's skin this deeply? I wasn't paying attention... It must have been something worse than his good-soldier introduction of Quayle to the Astrodome in '92. He assembled books about virtue; I skimmed one once. He said people should try to be good; Hard to disagree. He was easily ignored thereafter, wasn't he? So why this bitterness?

If we can't have a good laugh at an insufferable moralizer getting taken down two pegs, and making contrite speeches, then the terrorists have won.

I sent this to you in e-mail, but: Um, Matt? I don't know if you look at your own blog very frequently, but you appear to have posted a string of posts today with headers ending in
colons, and no text.

This could be intentional, but I'm guessing maybe not.

You might want to check on this. This post is one of those with no text. Same for the four below it. The post on Dr. Frank has text, and the one on wine news, but none in between.

This is how it appears to me, using both Mozilla, and double-checking with Internet Explorer. Am I the only one not seeing any body text in the aforementioned posts? It seems odd that no one else has commented on this.

Addendum: actually, quite a few other, earlier, posts of yours consist of nothing but subject headers ending in a colon and no further text, including "Hinckle Bites Brugmann Back:," "Good Michael Kinsley Column on Republican Balanced-Budget Hypocrisy:," "Introducing the LaLaTimes:," and so on. Weird.

Gary -- Thanks for your diligence ... but just treat 'em as headlines on links, nothing more.

I should also add -- Gary's blog has been on fire lately, and folks should go check it out.

Cridland,

Our gracious host calls him an "insufferable moralizer" but I think "sanctimonious prick" is more on the mark.

My main beef with Bennett is the hypocrisy of his selective bashing: lying about getting a blowjob makes one unfit for the presidency but lying about a drunk driving conviction is OK.

He once dated Janis Joplin? Wow! I know someone who had a run-in with Janis and the situation he described was not pretty. Y'know the '60s were a time of expanding definitions and boundaries. "Dated" could mean any number of >ahem

Sorry John, can't recall specifics. It was in the air about 15 years ago and seen in at least two sources. Interest waned when it became apparent that he'd had nothing to do with the guitars on "I Need A Man to Love"... NOTHING.

Liberal types are making too much of this, but Layne enlightens with his description of Bennett's wing of the casino. Imagine that Bennett had been locking himself in the basement every night and quietly drinking himself unconcho. Or going home every night and having sex with another man, one of his same gender. Or watching television for 4 hours a night. Nothing you or I would choose, but legal and private choices about a life well-lived. At some point he'd be left alone.

But his critics are schoolmarms, and as if to show that they can be hip too, they're clucking through smiles. But clucking ain't cool. And a talent for it won't bring earnest students to a cause.
