E-mail of the Week: From Am...

E-mail of the Week: From Amy McLaughlin, apparently in response to my Patriot II article:

Subject: What are you afraid of Matt?

I wonder about you lefties who fear these upgraded measures of security. You must have something to hide, and since my husband works for the DIA, I'll make sure he looks into what it may be.

Unless she's talking about the Detroit Institute for the Arts, the DIA McLaughlin is presumably referring to is the Defense Intelligence Agency, which is a "Department of Defense combat support agency that produces, analyzes and disseminates military intelligence information." Humorously, if Amy McLaughlin makes good on her petulant threat, her husband will be breaking the law. From the DIA's FAQ page:
Q: Does the DIA spy on Americans? Does it keep a file on you?
A: The DIA deals with foreign military intelligence. DIA is prohibited by law and in no circumstance does it collect information on U.S. citizens or on information not related to military intelligence.
I'll let y'all know how the DIA's public affairs department responds.

Empire is 'in'.
The brown shirts are back.
The laws are more ambiguous than ever, and selective enforcement is as common as Mayo at Burger King.
You better be good you lefty scoundrel you!

Dang, Matt, please do let us know what happens. This is the first "defense" of Patriot II I've heard, and it doesn't bode well.

Posted by: Andrew at April 9, 2003 06:46 PM

McLaughlin as in John E McLaughlin? God, I hope not.

And, you know, what a maroon!

Posted by: Jackie D at April 9, 2003 08:05 PM

You're a lefty? I figured you were moderate. Ah well.

Posted by: Vince at April 9, 2003 08:05 PM

Don't worry Matt. Barney and I have a file *this* thick on la Eme (as we refer to the subject). They throw dirt, we unload the dumptruck.

Posted by: Ben Sullivan at April 9, 2003 08:10 PM

Incidentally, we don't really.

Posted by: Ben Sullivan at April 9, 2003 08:13 PM

As far as anyone knows.

Posted by: Ben Sullivan at April 9, 2003 08:17 PM

I'm against random rectal probes. I must be hiding something up there.

Posted by: dc at April 9, 2003 08:36 PM

Hmm... since I linked to your article with several favorable comments, does that mean I'm a co-conspirator?

Occur to anybody she was teasing?

Posted by: Kevin McGehee at April 10, 2003 05:37 AM

Following Kevin's wild surmise, I think everyone can relax - the DIA is as likely to find useful intelligence here as we are there.

Posted by: Tom Maguire at April 10, 2003 06:03 AM

If you're feeling really ornery, you can call up the DIA, ask to speak to Mr. McLaughlin and tell him that his wife's big mouth is jeopardizing his career and reputation.

"Occur to anybody she was teasing?"

HA HA HA! The McCarthyism material always slays.

Call me crazy, but you don't have to be a leftist to fear obscene government surveillance powers, especially when the evidence says they're not needed.

Also, Matt, props for the level-headed report about the PAII. You were honest when a lot of other writers have been sensational on this topic. And, I think, there is no need to be sensational -- the details speak for themselves.

Thanks, Nik!

Nik said, "Call me crazy, but you don't have to be a leftist to fear obscene government surveillance powers, especially when the evidence says they're not needed."

Certainly true. If you do find a right-winger who thinks Patriot II is just fine, you should just ask him whether he wants the executive branch to have all this power when Hillary Clinton is elected President.

Tread lightly with this one:

the Detroit Institute's Modern & Contemporary collection can be terrifying indeed.

Hey Matt-- why not release her e- mail address so all of us who don't like brownshirts-- I'd call myself anti- idiotarian right, but the first two words are most important here-- can mail her and invite her husband to "investigate THIS!"

Posted by: Steve Bodio at April 10, 2003 08:05 PM

Steve -- I might do that. Want to wait a bit first, though....

Posted by: Matt Welch at April 10, 2003 08:29 PM

Maybe she means DEA. You know, all you crazy leftists are supposed to be high all the time.
Me, I only suck red wine.
