my '71 VW Bus across country. I can't tell you how excited we were at the sight of the huge green sign on the highway that read "WEED Next 3 Exits".

Somewhere on I-5 or some other highway up there, there's a sign that says "Weed" with an arrow pointing one direction, and "College" with an arrow pointing the other way (the local junior college, I guess). It's the only place in the world you have to choose between the two.

That's R-i-m-e-n-s-n-y-d-e-r. Sorry, dude!

Um, Matt, if you'll recall, we went to school with Abner Weed's granddaughter (or was it great-granddaughter) Sharlene Weed. It's been so long that I can't remember if her name is spelled with an S or a C, unfortunately.

Dude! C/Sharlene fucking Weed? I had *no* idea, not that I would remember things like "details," or "1987." Next thing you'll tell me Michael Smith was ... well, Valentine Michael Smith. Which I suspected all along.

For the rest of you, these were members of our university's Associated Students board, which Doug assigned me to cover for the college daily. My first council meeting, the vice president (Smith) conducted in a big blue wizard's hat, barefooted, and even the scowling College Republicanish frat guy dude would walk out to the balcony every half-hour, get totally baked, and come back in giggling. The president was a guy who lived in an anti-apartheid protest shantytown for a year or something; my favorite source (Marc "the Sharc" Evans) was fond of taking chainsaws to cardboard oil rigs at anti-Exxon protests ... Man, that was fun.
