I remember reading that comment. I wonder what James' source was for the "died on the mound" story: it's too weird for him to randomly make up.

The most likely source is some magazine article or other about the Chief, who may very well have received, or concocted, a romanticized version of the circumstances surrounding his brother's death.

Was the anecdote in the updated H.B.A.? My lord, what next--will we ever know the real truth about the "mysterious" death of Ed Delahanty?

Naw, it didn't survive into the new edition. Not a whole lot did: the original is still a de rigeur purchase for completists.
