Nick Denton's Contrarian Take on L'affaire Moran:

From Denton:

"However, enough Jewish writers and influencers have gone over to the hawks, or the angsty undecideds, to leave America's anti-war movement intellectually depleted. The American Left, without Jews, is reduced to a bunch of lumpen Stalinists, and posturing students who say no to war as foreplay before their demo sex."

Am I the only one who found that statement rather odd? It sort of boils down to, "...without Jews, the American Left is nothing."

Isn't that pretty much what the kooky, racist far Right has been saying for years?

Well, I can't vouch for the accuracy or even weirdness of the statement, but I don't think the kooky far Right has been making that *precise* point.

I think what makes Moran's comments worthy of outrage is less the facts supporting them an more his tone. Moran said: "The leaders of the Jewish community are influential enough that they could change the direction of where this is going, and I think they should." Why is this relevant? In other words, why should I care that Jews support the war? Unless he is suggesting that the support among Jews is disingenuous or fraudulant, it shouldn't be a topic for discussion. To replace "Jews" with "Norwegians" renders the statement meaningless. To suggest that the dispropotionate support is relevant is anti-semitic per se because it necessarily implies that Jews have a collective, ulterior motive.
