Matt, what color is the sky in your world? Except for those who simply hate the U.N. depending upon the political weather (when it equated Zionism with racism or when another NYTimes story about the amazing number of unpaid parking tickets they generate), I've never heard anyone saying the UN or NATO should pack it in (wait, there were pundits wondering about NATO's role in the post-Soviet Union world, does that count?)

The only thing more confusing than your post were the comments. Does your blog have a "subtitles" function?

" I wonder how many times in the 1980s... France was declared “not an ally”?"

Probably quite a few. The French have always been multi-lateralism bashers. They withdrew military support from NATO in 1966 which prompted the move of NATO headquarters from Paris to Brussels. France didn't rejoin until after the collapse of the Soviet Union, after the purpose of NATO had passed, and still remains outside some NATO command structures.

As late as 1996 France was still setting off nuclear explosions on the islands of the south Pacific and was condemned by most European, Asian, S.American and N. American nations.

We could all cite further examples.

It is difficlut to see France as an ally for anyone since they are such obdurate unilateralists, concerned only with their own economic and political interests.
