" is a stimulating experience as the man lets us know, for instance, that he considers speaking truth to power to be a waste of time because power already knows the truth.

If LA Weekly is less critical than the LA Times, it may be because the LA Weekly is desperately trying to save the left wing from the Chomskian nonsense that has marginalized it so, while a mainstream paper can afford to be amused by his outre pronouncements, knowing that they aren't going anywhere.

D'oh, make that if LA Weekly is MORE critical...

"because his point of view is so rarely heard" ... Ugh, all we hear is that prattle!

The phrase "speaking truth to power to be a waste of time because power already knows the truth." Is an interesting one. Is Chomsky saying:
1)Power is so willingly corrupt that telling it the truth is a feckless waste of time since they are willingly abusing it.

or
2)Power is an omniscient agent of good, incorruptiple and already knowing as much or more of the truth than an observer can inform it of.

either interpretation would seem equally valid and equally foolish.

He means the first, Bill. As far as I can tell, the "truth" one is supposed to speak to power is "You suck." Always. Even when it doesn't.

Once power has figured that out, it tends to stop listening. Another victory for the intellectual Left!
