Google, and other Top Refer...

Google, and other Top Referrers: Inspired by Copeland's Google-metrics post, and liberated by a suddenly functioning computer-modem combo, I thought I'd track Google's rise to prominence in my referral logs, over time. Here are my top 3 referrers each month since I began the weblog portion of this site, as measured by Webalizer (and added up, imperfectly, by moi). When Google didn't make the top three, I included it & everyone above. The numbers are rounded up, more or less, to the nearest 20, and some months had several days missing:

NOVEMBER 2002
4920 Instapundit
4520 Ken Layne
2140 Google

OCTOBER
5500 Instantman
4160 Google
2140 Layne

Quick note here -- these last two months were the only ones in which anyone came within shouting distance of Glenn Reynolds.
SEPTEMBER
7480 Reynolds
3660 Google
2060 Andrew Sullivan

AUGUST
9640 Reynolds
2540 Google
900 Layne

JULY (when I stopped posting for a couple weeks)
4800 Reynolds
1940 Google
380 Tabloid.net (which ain't published in three years)

JUNE
10740 Reynolds
2400 Google
1220 Sullivan

MAY (missing two days)
18740 Reynolds
2220 Google
1240 Virginia Postrel

APRIL
21600 Reynolds
2160 Google
1960 Layne

MARCH
12880 Reynolds
2040 Google
1060 Layne

FEBRUARY (minus 3+ days)
14520 Reynolds
9980 Slate (some pick-o-the-day deal)
3120 Sullivan
1600 Tim Blair
1380 Google

JANUARY (missing 2+ days)
12160 Reynolds
3840 Postrel
1240 Team Bleah
1100 Google

DECEMBER 2001 (missing 11+ days)
7120 Reynolds
520 Google
420 Nick Denton

NOVEMBER:
15260 Instapundit
1480 Denton
900 Google

OCTOBER (missing 2+ days)
7840 Instapundit
2400 Denton
680 Tabloid
520 Little Green Footballs
500 Google

SEPTEMBER (missing 3+ days)
1060 Google
360 Metafilter
220 Denton

Context? My traffic as a whole has been pretty steady, though declining in some measures, since February 2002. Every day since then, I've averaged around 10,000 hits (the currency in which referrers are measured).

Google has essentially quadrupled, while Instapundit is down to a quarter of its previous referrals, as Glenn's readers continue to create new blogs & stop using his site as a home page. Layne fluctuates madly, Tabloid still produces several hundred hits per month, and any link by Andrew Sullivan or Slate produces an enormous spike. When I have a spare 10 hours next spring, I'll make a pretty graphical page crammed with enough wonky site-stats to test even my patience. Of course, I could just give you the password to my Webalizer account, but that wouldn't be nearly as much fun, would it?
