DoJ Trying to Help Launch New Alt-Weekly in L.A.?: That's the intriguing premise of Tim Rutten's latest article on the New Times/Village Voice anti-trust investigation, in today's L.A. Times. Lots of interesting detail (here's the L.A. Examiner condensed version), and a thing-that-makes-me-go-hmmm near the end:

Good Christ, was one simpleton ever born under a more blessed star? A guy who never had any business running the sixth largest economy in the world almost did; he talks gibberish about starting a paper, and now maybe one will be handed to him (sort of); and people who actually have the smarts to run something like this (Matt Welch, Ken Layne, et al) struggle to make ends meet. Hello, um, justice anyone?
