DoJ Trying to Help Launch N...

DoJ Trying to Help Launch New Alt-Weekly in L.A.?condensed version), and a thing-that-makes-me-go-hmmm near the end:

if they do, in fact, seek the remedy now being weighed -- its beneficiary in L.A. could be an unlikely person: former mayor and one-time Republican gubernatorial hopeful Richard Riordan.
Why investigate this particular anti-competitive newspaper deal, and now? That will be an interesting story.

Good Christ, was one simpleton ever born under a more blessed star? A guy who never had any business running the sixth largest economy in the world almost did; he talks gibberish about starting a paper, and now maybe one will be handed to him (sort of); and people who actually have the smarts to run something like this (Matt Welch, Ken Layne, et al) struggle to make ends meet. Hello, um, justice anyone?

DoJ Trying to Help Launch N...

DoJ Trying to Help Launch New Alt-Weekly in L.A.?: That's the intriguing premise of Tim Rutten's latest article on the New Times/Village Voice anti-trust investigation, in today's L.A. Times. Lots of interesting detail (here's the L.A. Examiner condensed version), and a thing-that-makes-me-go-hmmm near the end:

if they do, in fact, seek the remedy now being weighed -- its beneficiary in L.A. could be an unlikely person: former mayor and one-time Republican gubernatorial hopeful Richard Riordan.
