'He was on the top floor of a building when it was hit by an airplane': Henry Copeland wasn't here when the attacks hit his country, but he has since moved back after a decade of living abroad. That kind of re-patriation can be pretty jarring, I can tell you. Here's what Henry planned for today:

Like Glenn, I'll try to spend the day looking forward, working, thinking, blogging, reading. Then I'll play soccer with the kids after school. No TV.

From time to time, I will think of the anonymous five-year-old girl I talked to at a get-together last month on Long Island who, after she got sand in her eye and couldn't find her mother in the crowd, said her father wasn't there to comfort her "because he was on the top floor of a building when it was hit by an airplane." For her, September 11 isn't about Al Qaeda, Bush I & II, courage, four jets and three buildings, an inferno, a war, a flag, a national epiphany. September 11 means the father who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and who does not exist now.

Speaking of ex-expats, here's an e-mail from a friend who just came back from a trip to Budapest:
Ken was dead on target about living in America...especially after all of our experiences in other countries. I was a damn proud New Yorker/American in Budapest, often fighting off America-bashing (the dumb kind) over beers in bars. I am so happy I came back from Budapest for today.
