"Can a country that maintains a caste system really be called a democracy?"

Wasn't slavery a particularly nasty form of a caste system? Simmons' thesis that anti-hierarchical thought was a large part of the American revolution is reasonable, but it wasn't like we managed to implement it very well for a long while. We improved, and continue to do so, India has and will as well.
