CNN Tries to Call Springsteen an Exploiter: Howard Owens has a terrific post on a series of foolish questions asked by various CNN anchors. How the fletch is Bruce Springsteen exploiting the Sept. 11 massacre more than CNfletchingN? I didn't see an "America's New War" logo and theme music on his new record. ... What garbage.
Posted by at July 31, 2002 11:39 AM"Fletch"?
Posted by: Ken Basart at July 31, 2002 12:02 PMisnt there a war these people are supposed to be covering? this fletching war has been going on for almost a year now and i havent seen one of these tv "news" stations show me one fletching picture of one fletching soldier shooting and killing one fletching terrorist.
what the fletch!
back during Nam there were three tv stations that showed the news a total of two to three hours a day. we got plenty of army guys shooting other army guys during that war.
nowadays we have 40-50 news shows and they cant even find a crazy billionaire hiding in the desert, so they talk about a fletching new bruce springsteen record 20 years after new bruce springsteen record was relavant.
give us the news or if you dont have any news give us videos of rappers cursing atop fancy cars as bikini girls dance.
find us the war or quit saying its a war.
you fletching fletchers.

Posted by: Bill Quick at July 31, 2002 09:20 PMHappy Birthday Matt!
176 years ago today, a man and woman (mostly the woman) gave birth to a bouncing blonde boy in Long beach, CA. The rest, as they say, is history. And the world is a better place.
Posted by: Vaclav H. at July 31, 2002 10:41 PMThanks, Vok-laff! Sure has been a fun day, seeing some great Shakespeare in the park (L.A. South Coast Botanic Garden ... betcha never heard of it!), eating down in Pedro at the Crusty Crab, reading Jim Bellows' fun book down at the bone-empty Abalone Cove on peninsula.... Plus, I just found out that Tom Wolfe wrote his devastating satire of The New Yorker -- and his first book -- when he was 34 fletching years old. There's hope for me yet.
Posted by: Matt Welch at July 31, 2002 11:41 PMhappy birthday bro
if i knew i woulda done something special on my site!!!
Trying to keep it clean, Antoine. And thanks for the sweet happy-birthday on the world's favorite blog.
Posted by: Matt Welch at August 1, 2002 12:52 AMHappy Birthday, Matt! Hoist a jug or two for me.
Posted by: Bill Quick at August 1, 2002 05:37 PMO.K. Happy birthday!
But I am not happy about the direction the language is taking on this blog!
Posted by: Fletcher Fletching at August 1, 2002 07:59 PMThis reminds me of the "smurf" bit on SNL a few years ago. (think: "smurf me harder baby")
Besides, the new Springsteen album owns, it's got violins now.
Posted by: Sean Kirby at August 1, 2002 08:54 PMI think Bruce, Steve Earle, Neil Young, and that cowboy singer (Dirk Smith, or whatever his name is, some hill n' dale kinda of stage moniker) should all go on tour together, each one take a corner of the stage, and have some kind of 911-inspired concert competition. We could finally determine once and for all who is most exploitative of 911, who "captures" it the best, and so on.
Belated happy birthday, Matt. Don't sweat the novel. Conrad didn't get a novel published until he was 39, I think, which gives even me hope.
Posted by: Jim O'Grady at August 3, 2002 08:42 AMConrad might not be the best comparison: perhaps we wasn't published until he was 39, but he was published in his 3rd language, which I think he didn't learn until he was an adult.
Matt, don't be discouraged by the fact that at your age, Bonaparte already controlled Europe, or that Keats had been dead for almost 10 years, or that Jesus was dead for a little while but then conquered death. Go at your own pace, buddy.
Posted by: Greg at August 5, 2002 01:37 PMGreg -- the worst is the story about Mick Jagger's 25th birthday party ... or was it John Lennon's? Where one guy says "wait up," and goes and puts on the new song, "Revolution." The other guy says "that's cool," and pulls out *his* latest, "Jumping Jack Flash." Or something like that.... I didn't enjoy turning 25.
