I am suddenly reminded of a Marv Levy quote from a few years back about an upcoming game when asked if the game was a "must-win". No, he replied, World War II, now there was a must-win. Who won that one again??

The worst thing is, I had the best piece of smack talk all lined up...if only we'd beaten the Germans. Your friend's effort is decidedly mediocre, but I suppose as German humor goes it's brilliant. (hehe)

Anyway, here's my counterfactual smack -- which maybe we can still direct at the French, Italians, etc.:

Don't worry, now that all you European countries have given up your national autonomy, maybe in four years the EU will field a team of all-stars that can hang with the U.S., Turkey, and Senegal.

Man, that would've been fun to use on a couple of my pals.

Whatever is your German friend talking about? Was there some sort of sporting contest going on? The Olympics are over, right? Why would we be playing against Germany for anything?

(Actually, I told the folks around our very international department that the only reason I wanted the US to win was so that foreign correspondents would go around the country asking people, "What do you think?", only to get the response, "'Bout whut?")

I also seem to have found the only two Italian soccer haters. No wonder they're here (in Australia) rather than Italy. Soccer-hating is probably illegal there or something.

i believe it was gary lineker, a famous english footballer, who once said: football is a simple game - 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end - the germans win.
