Other Sites That Delve Into Media Error

The Web is filled with sites from all over the political spectrum that are devoted to media bias, but the number that track actual errors appears to be small.

Besides Slipup.com and Urban Legends, there is a relatively new Complaint Board on the Brill's Content site.

Launched in November, the site intends to be a "media dispute forum" for people who think they have been treated unfairly by the media. The targets of their wrath are then invited to respond.

There are currently a dozen cases posted ranging from San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown's press secretary bristling over a City Journal article titled "Willie Brown Shows How Not To Run a City," to New York Daily News Publisher Mort Zuckerman dismissing New York magazine's Michael Wolff as a hack who "violates basic journalistic practices."

Another site that frequently cites journalistic errors and fabrications is The Obscure Store and Reading Room, a value-added daily Web log published by St. Paul Pioneer Press tech writer James Romenesko.

"A significant percentage of my readers are [journalists] in newsrooms across the world," Romenesko said via e-mail. "Thus, media stories -- and tales of plagiarism or unethical behavior -- are of interest to them. But my experience tells me that non-journalists are also interested in the professional -- and unprofessional -- behavior of reporters."

Frank Sennett of Slipup.com calls The Obscure Store "an inspiration for journalists. It's a must-read."
